Annecy Festival: A Major Economic Asset for the Region

Share

CITIA, organiser of the International Animation Film Festival and its market, the Mifa, has carried out a study on the economic impact of the 2025 Annecy Festival.

The economic benefits for the region are significant. The ratio between public funding for the event and its economic impact reveals a substantial return on investment!

Let's recap on Annecy 2025:

  • 35 permanent staff along with around a hundred additional staff
  • 660 volunteers
  • 18,200 accredited attendees including 16,619 visitors from outside of the Haute-Savoie
  • 118 countries represented, 46,2% foreign accredited attendees
  • Almost 3,000 organisations present
  • 7 days
  • 350 screenings
  • 136,000 admissions

Why carry out such a study?

Tourist events, whether cultural, sporting or recreational, actively contribute to the economic development of the regions in which they are organised.
"We wanted to use a rigorous method to accurately measure the economic impact of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (the last study dates back to 2022). Owing to its international appeal and reach, the Annecy Festival has a significant economic impact on the region. The Festival has cemented its strategic role in France's cultural ecosystem, delivering an exemplary return on public investment in terms of economic benefits." – Dominique Puthod, Chairman of CITIA

Cinema's cultural role is well established, however, the economic impact of film festivals is often underestimated. Nevertheless, the event organiser's expenditure and the presence of professionals, journalists and audiences over several days generate substantial revenue with a significant impact on the local economy.

The study:

Supervised by Dominique Puthod, Chairmen of CITIA and lecturer at the Université Savoie Mont Blanc, the study uses a method developed by the Direction générale des entreprises (Directorate-General for Enterprise) as its reference framework. Its aim is to measure participants' spending via a survey carried out at the end of the most recent edition of the event, which took place from 18th June to 4th July 2025. The panel of 1,850 individuals surveyed guarantees accurate results and a sample that is representative of the different types of accredited attendees (Festival, Mifa, Students, etc.).

The economic impact:

The participants' expenditure combined with that of the organiser CITIA resulted in a short-term economic impact of €32.642 million.
This represents a considerable boost to the local economy, as:

  • €1 invested by the City generates €71 for the region
  • €1 of public funding generates €13.64 for the region

As a comparison, in 2022 the short-term economic impact was €22.8 million, an increase of 43% over three years.
