It is with immense sadness that we have learned of the death of Marjane Satrapi at the age of 56.

A Franco-Iranian artist, author and director, she left an indelible mark on the history of animation film with "Persepolis", a seminal work that profoundly transformed the way animation is perceived. By sharing her deeply personal story with a rare freedom, sincerity and intensity, Marjane Satrapi demonstrated that animation can be a tremendous instrument for intimate, political and universal expression.

Through her work, she has contributed to paving the way for a new generation of socially aware works that use animation to chronicle reality, memory and human journeys. Films such as Ari Folman's "Waltz with Bashir" and Jonas Poher Rasmussen's "Flee" have also shown just how impactful animation can be in conveying powerful, personal and political narratives.

Her career will also remain a true source of inspiration for the generations of female directors who continue to advance our industry today. In a sector where women still remain under-represented in directing feature films, Marjane Satrapi demonstrated that a unique perspective could not only find its place but also leave a lasting legacy in the world of cinema.

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival extends its heartfelt sympathies to her family, loved ones and all those touched by her work.

Thank you Marjane Satrapi.
