Among the films in competition, the juries have the sensitive mission of determining the Official Awards, including the Cristal for a Short Film and the Cristal for a Feature Film, and the Special Awards.

Feature Films

  • Tomm Moore
    Tomm MOORE

    Biography

    Over Cartoon Saloon’s history, Tomm Moore has worked as Director, Art Director, Storyboarder, Animator and Illustrator across a range of projects. Tomm has directed universally successful feature films. All three were nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards: The Secret of Kells in 2009 (Audience Award at Annecy), and the spiritual follow-up, Song of the Sea in 2014. His latest feature film Wolfwalkers, which he co-directed with Ross Stewart, received several prominent critics’ awards including the LAFCA Award and NYFCC Award as well as nominations for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA and wins in several categories including Best Director and Best Independent Feature at the 2021 Annie Awards. He is currently working as a producer across several of Cartoon Saloon’s new film and series’ projects as well as refocusing on his personal art training.

     
  • Charlotte de la Gournerie

    Biography

    Charlotte de La Gournerie is Producer and Co-Founder of Sun Creature. Trained at GOBELINS, l'école de l'image, she has a degree in production management. After graduation, Charlotte co-created Sun Creature in Denmark and has been developing Sun Creature France in Bordeaux since early 2021. She was 3-time Oscar nominee in 2022 with Flee for Best Animation Film, Best Documentary, and Best International Feature Film. Her latest production is the Cartoon Network series The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe (40x11), which will be released soon on HBO Max. She is currently producing several major animation projects and sharing her production experience around Europe.

     
  • Frédéric Maire

    Biography

    From 1983,Frédéric Maire, director and journalist, works for several Swiss-French and Italian media. Alongside, from 1986, he works with the Locarno International Film Festival on the communication and programming. From 1988 to 1992, he teaches introduction to cinematography at the Lausanne Cantonal Art School (ECAL). In 1992, he co-founds and co-directs La Lanterne Magique, a film club for children. In 2005, he is appointed Artistic Director of the Locarno International Film Festival. In October 2009, he becomes Director of the Swiss Film Library. In May 2017, he is elected President of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF).

  • Félix Dufour-Laperrière

    Biography

    Félix Dufour-Laperrière’s films, including the documentary Transatlantic (2014), testify to a constant tension between storylines and formal exploration, and have a strong connection with the visual and contemporary arts. Ville Neuve (2018), his first feature film entirely painted and drawn on paper, was released at the Venice Film Festival (Venice Days). His animated documentary essay Archipel (2021) receives the Contrechamp Jury Distinction at the Annecy Festival and subsequently widespread international distribution. Félix is now starting production on his third animated feature, Death Doesn’t Exist, and continues his work as a producer at Embuscade Films.

     
  • Yonfan

    Biography

    Born in China, now living in Hong Kong, Yonfan wrote, directed, and produced 14 motion pictures. During his career, he gave Maggie Cheung her first on-screen romantic role and made Chow Yun-fat a box-office star (Lost Romance, 1985), discovered Daniel Wu (Bishonen, 1998), and revived the career of the legendary Rie Miyazawa (Peony Pavilion, 2002). He has worked with practically every Chinese screen siren of his era. Yonfan recently restored his complete film library and his photographic work about China and Tibet in the late 70’s and 80’s. No.7 Cherry Lane (2019, Best Screenplay Award at the Venice Festival) was his animation debut and first new film since Prince of Tears (2009, in Venice Competition).

     
  • Ilze Burkovska Jacobsen

    Biography

    Born in Latvia, Ilze Burkovska Jacobsen studies in Norway, sharing her time between both these countries. In 2000, she co-founders the company Bivrost Film with her husband Trond Jacobsen. Bivrost produces several highly acclaimed animated series for children, addressing difficult topics – bullying, violence, and sexual abuse. The film My Body Belongs to Me wins an Emmy Award together with the TV channel NRK Super who broadcasted it. The animated documentary My Favorite War itself wins the Contrechamp Award at Annecy 2020, and since then has been screened around the world. In Latvia, the film also won the National Award for Best Animated Film and Best Director.

  • Jean Labadie

    Biography

    From 1986 to 2007, Jean Labadie manages Paradis Films, BAC Films and Mars Films. Through these companies he distributes about 500 films that win numerous awards at major international festivals, including 8 Palmes d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2007, Jean Labadie creates Le Pacte, a distribution, production and international sales company that distributes about 20 films a year, signed by authors such as Nanni Moretti, Jim Jarmusch, Ken Loach, François Ozon, Christophe Honoré, Sólveig Anspach, Alain Resnais, Thomas Lilti, Cristian Mungiu, Wim Wenders, Hirokazu Kore-eda and Matteo Garrone.

     
  • Adriaan Lokman

    Biography

    Adriaan Lokman investigates the boundaries between abstraction and reality, with the ongoing desire to involve the viewer. Decors and characters, observations of often repetitive day-to-day routines, reduced to minimal, often geometrically ordered shapes, are at the limit of the recognizable. He plays with codes, signs, and icons of our time and brings them to life with an orchestration of lights and shadows, camera movements and musical compositions to create rhythm and take spectators into his virtual worlds. He has made 6 independent films, including Barcode (Grand Prix for Best Short Film, Annecy 2002), Chase, and Flow (André-Martin Distinction for a French Short Film, Annecy 2019).

     
  • Saskia Von Virág

    Biography

    Saskia von Virág, founder of Virage Film, is based in Zurich, Switzerland. She has been producing animated shorts since 2009 – such as The Kiosk by Anete Melece, among others. In 2013, she joined the selection committee at Fantoche Int. Animation Film Festival and in 2019 the board of the GSFA (Groupement Suisse du Film d'Animation). Before losing her heart to animation, she worked for the Zurich Opera and in the music business – mainly in contemporary Jazz. In 2006, she graduated from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) with a Master of Advanced Studies in Cultural Management.

  • Ron Dyens

    Biography

    Ron Dyens created Sacrebleu in 1999. Since, he has produced over 90 films (shorts, features, and series) that have received more than 2,000 selections worldwide (Annecy, Cannes, Sundance, Berlinale, the Oscars, TIFF, Venise, etc.) and won prestigious awards (Cristal, Palme d'or, Silver Bear, César, etc.). He has also directed five short films selected at Cannes, Clermont-Ferrand, etc. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Académie des César, Unifrance, and the Syndicat des Producteurs Indépendants (SPI).

     
  • Olivier Calvert

    Biography

    Active for over 25 years as a sound designer, Olivier Calvert has sculpted the soundscapes of more than 100 animated films, of which more than ten were Annecy award winners. Skilled in all categories, he provided his expertise to comedies, dramas, poetic, or even experimental films. A regular collaborator with Theodore Ushev and Patrick Bouchard, he also worked with other well-established animators such as Joanna Quinn, Georges Schwizgebel, Michèle Cournoyer, Regina Pessoa, Priit and Olga Pärn, to name a few. For him, animation is an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

     
  • Maria Anestopoulou

    Biography

    Maria Anestopoulou studied Law in Greece and Intellectual & Industrial Property Law in the UK. Founding member and programme director of Platforma Video, a festival in Athens celebrating digital film. In 2008, with Vassilis Karamitsanis she founded Animasyros International Animation Festival, Greece’s largest animation event. As its Director, she develops international cooperation schemes with multiple animation organisations, dedicating herself to promoting the local animation industry internationally. Former member of ASIFA Hellas’ Board of Directors. Recently, producer of the animated documentary Hellenic Places: Hermoupolis. In her non-animated world, Maria works as a legal advisor.

  • Laurence Herszberg

    Biography

    After a career as an administrator in various national theaters from 1981, Laurence Herszberg joins the Opéra Bastille in 1989, then the Réunion des musées nationaux in 1995. In 2002, she becomes Executive Director of the Forum des images, an institution dedicated to film and audiovisual. In 2010, anticipating the public and professionals’ enthusiasm for series, she creates the Series Mania Festival. In 2017, the Ministry of Culture launches a consultation to create a benchmark international festival around series, which is won by the Hauts-de-France Region and the City of Lille who call on Laurence Herszberg. Laurence Herszberg is a Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honor and a board member of the Philharmonie de Paris.

     
  • Michael Frei

    Biography

    Born in Appenzell, Switzerland in 1987, Michael Frei is a filmmaker and artist based in Zürich. He studied animation at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn. His animated films have won numerous awards at international festivals. In 2014, he was invited to participate in the Animation Artist in Residence Tokyo programme. His interactive projects Plug & Play (2015) and KIDS (2019) became Internet phenomena and were in competition at the Annecy Festival. He is co-founder of the Playables. production company in Zürich.

     
  • Cesar Cabral

    Biography

    Cesar Cabral has a Bachelor’s Degree in Film from the School of Arts and Communication (ECA), São Paulo University. He co-founded the stop-motion animation studio Coala Filmes in 2000. Cesar directed the stop-motion shorts The Re Bordosa Dossier and Storm, both selected at many prestigious film festivals worldwide, such as Annecy, Hiroshima, Havana, and Sundance. He created and directed 2 seasons of the stop-motion animated series Angeli the Killer, broadcasted in Brazil. Bob Spit – We Do Not Like People, his first feature, received the Contrechamp Award at Annecy, and the Grand Prize at Ottawa, in 2021.

  • Ramsey Naito

    Biography

    Ramsey Naito is President of Animation for Paramount Animation since Sept. 2021. 2018, EVP of Animation Production and Development at Nickelodeon Animation, manages content across all formats and platforms, and key franchises such as SpongeBob SquarePants, bringing new projects and key partnerships such as Star Trek: Prodigy with CBS Studios. 2019, Naito oversees the deal with Netflix to produce original animated feature films and TV series such as Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling. Naito produced DreamWorks Animation’s Oscar-nominated feature The Boss Baby and has worked at Blue Sky Studios, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon Movies. She's a member of Women in Animation, the Producers Guild of America and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

     
  • Rita Mbanga

    Biography

    Rita Mbanga has 20 years of experience working in animated and live-action feature films, commercials, short films and TV series. Rita is part of the team behind the Jungle Beat animated brand. The Jungle Beat TV series has been broadcast in over 180 countries and has a YouTube audience of nearly 200 million views per month. Jungle Beat: The Movie was selected for the Feature Film competition at Annecy 2020, and was acquired by Netflix, and in 2021 ranked in Netflix’s Top 0 Movies globally, reaching 3rd place in the US. Jungle Beat: The Movie 2 is in production and an epic family adventure is in prep.

     
  • Chris Nee

    Biography

    Peabody, Humanitas, NAACP, and Emmy Award-winner Chris Nee is the creator and executive producer of Doc McStuffins and developed and EP’d the hit series Vampirina. In 2018, Nee began an overall deal at Netflix where she writes and produces across animation, kids, teens, and adults. Nee’s first five project announcements at Netflix include Ridley Jones, Dino Daycare, Ada Twist, Scientist, and We the People, which she produced with Higher Ground Productions with President Obama and Mrs Obama serving as EPs, and Spirit Rangers, which is created and executive produced by Native American Karissa Valencia and staffed with an entirely Native writing staff.
