The story of John Henry is that of a big railroad man who challenges a machine called the Inky Poo to a spike-driving contest. Althought John Henry beats the Inky Poo, the strain kills him. In a poignant closing scene, as mourners gather around John Henry's grave in the pouring rain, an old preacher delivers a moving eulogy: "Even if John Henry wasn't as big as the stories say he was, he was still a mighty man, living in the hearts of men forever and day."
